Packed with technology and advanced thinking, Vittorio Jano's masterpiece boasted a level of ingenuity, fit, and finish that was almost unparalleled. Built around a monocoque chassis, the Aurelia was powered by a brilliant 1,991 cc V-6 engine which drove the rear wheels via a clever transaxle. The recipe only improved the following year, when the Pinin Farina-styled B20 GT Coupe joined the model lineup. Borrowing the mechanical components from its more workaday sibling, the striking Coupe was not only handsome, it also soon proved itself in competition. rnrnOf the six distinct series that spanned the model's production life, the earliest Series I examples are arguably the most sought-after today. Chassis B20-1340 is one such example, having been completed at the factory on 3 December 1951, finished in the appealing combination of Amaranto over a Grigio cloth interior. The car is understood to have spent its early life in its native Italy, prior to being imported to the United Kingdom in 1998, when it was noted on an accompanying historic V5 registration document as being finished in green. The Lancia was subsequently offered at auction in May of the following year, finding a long-term home with an enthusiast based in Midhurst, Sussex. In July 2016 the Aurelia changed hands once more, having been acquired by the current owner in a deal brokered by marque specialist, Thornley Kelham. Though listed in a 1989 ACI document as being fitted with engine number B20-1340, by 1999 the engine number is noted as being B20-1347. rnrnFollowing its acquisition, chassis B20-1340 was treated to a raft of restoration work at Powells of Ripon Ltd. An accompanying invoice dated December 2018 details more than ?34,000 of work, including numerous engine and suspension components and almost ?22,000 in bodywork repairs. A second invoice from the same company followed in October 2019, with a strip-down and inspection of the engine, honing of the cylinders, a regrind of the crankshaft, and a rebuild of the carburettors amounting to ?31,418. In July 2019 the car was subject to a ?12,172 retrim at GB Classic Trim, encompassing refinishing of the headlining, door cards, cantrails, flooring, and centre tunnel. A rally timer, auxiliary tachometer, roof-mounted air vent, bucket seats, and harnesses hint at a competition past and ensure it is fully prepared for participation in historic tours and rallies such as the Mille Miglia Storica, for which it in eminently eligible. rnrnPresenting today in its factory-correct Amaranto, this spectacular early B20 GT Coupe is a fine example of its type that benefits from a recent comprehensive restoration. Developed under the direction of gifted engineer, Vittorio Jano, the model-named for the ancient 239-mile Via Aurelia that linked Rome and Pisa-was bristling with industry-leading technology and clever thinking. From its unitary body construction and ingenious rear transaxle to the world's first production V-6-a jewel of an engine with hemispherical combustion chambers and in-line valves-the Aurelia was quick, comfortable, and handled better than almost anything in its class. rnrnIt was also the car that marked Lancia's transition from small coachbuilder to mainstream manufacturer, and while the Aurelia initially broke cover in four-door Berlina guise, from the second year of production buyers could opt for the rakish B20 GT. Effortlessly stylish in its sharp two-door configuration, the coupe was a timeless shape that stood out even in the most glamorous company. It also had performance to match the looks, thanks to the introduction of an uprated 1,991 cc variant of Francesco de Virgilio's groundbreaking V-6. rnrnThere would be five major revisions leading to six distinct series during the Aurelia's life. Among the more notable changes was the introduction of the 2,451-cc engine with the Series III, and the move from semi-trailing arms to a De Dion tube rear suspension with the Series IV-but it was the final Series VI variant that would prove the most usable and refined. Not only did it benefit from the technological advancements of the earlier series, the run-out model also featured a number of subtle revisions ranging from improved sound insulation to opening quarter-light windows. rnrnChassis B20-3857 is one of these special Series VI examples, in addition to being one of just 25 right-hand-drive versions imported via UK distributor, Lancia England Ltd. First registered as 5 LME on 2 July 1957, the Aurelia was retained by Lancia England as a demonstrator and press car; it would famously feature in the 8 November 1957 issue of The Autocar, where it was described as without doubt one of the most desirable sporting cars of the decade. rnrnSold to an Italian in 1992, chassis 3857 was subsequently restored in Italy, a photographic record of which can be viewed on file. The car returned to the UK in 2008, whereupon it was reunited with its original registration number, 5 LME, prior to being recommissioned by Omicron Engineering. In 2010 it took part in the Mille Miglia Storica, and in 2019 it received a comprehensive service by marque specialist Thornley Kelham. This includes the Aurelia of the 1950s, a vehicle that was perhaps the most technically advanced in its generation. Most Lancia Aurelias were delivered as four-door sedans, but a two-door convertible and a two-door "GT" coupe were also offered. The latter two sportier versions have grown increasingly popular over time. Along with being a road-going car, they were also worthy racing competitors, finishing 2nd overall at the 1951 Mille Miglia, 1st in Class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans a month later, and a 1-2-3 finish at the 1952 Targa Florio.  In all its forms, the Aurelia had a unique design. Introduced in Berlina form in 1950, Lancia's Aurelia was a landmark post-war automobile. The first production car with a V-6 engine, and the first to come standard with radial tires, the Aurelia combined Lancia's traditional uni-body construction and sliding pillar front suspension with a rear transaxle and sophisticated, multi-link rear suspension. In opposition to the norm of Italian (and American) cars, the Aurelia was made strictly as a right-hand drive vehicle up until the production of the fourth series in 1954. This vehicle is among the few surviving examples of the initial 500 first series cars.  1951 saw the introduction of the B20 Gran Turismo, with a 1,991-cubic centimeter engine on a shorter 2,660-millimetre wheelbase. Nearly all 500 of the Series I B20s received the standard Vittorio Jano-designed GT body. The car offered here, chassis number B20-1346, is a rare example of a special design by Pinin Farina on the Series I platform. Although it shares many visual characteristics of the standard production Aurelias, this car features rare leather upholstery, a dashboard layout similar to later-series B20s, and nonstandard bumpers. Its distinctive two-color paint is elegantly delineated by a narrow molding that runs along the beltline and down and around the boot and back.  The French Lancia Club states that Chassis B20-1346, which was completed and invoiced on December 14th, 1951, appeared on the Pinin Farina stand at the 1952 Paris Salon. This would explain the car's unique French fixtures, including the battery cutout switch, Marchal lighting, Jaegar gauges, and French-made Zenith Stromberg carburetors.  In 2010 the body was stripped down to its bare metal for a glass-out repaint in its original shades of black over amaranto. United Kingdom Lancia experts Omicron replaced the rear wheel bearings, refreshed the gear linkage, rebuilt the carburettors, and rebuilt the lower half of the engine, including a new cylinder liner, re-metalling the bearings, and replacing the crankshaft.
