It was finished in Graphite Grey over a matching Grey leather interior and Light Grey soft-top. The car is known to have passed through the hands of at least two US owners in 1973 and 1975, both based in California, before being acquired by the consignor in 2016 at auction as a restoration project and subsequently imported to Germany. rnrnWhile in the care of the consigning owner, the 300 SL was subject to a complete restoration at the hands of marque specialist Lars Rombelsheim from 2016 to 2017-documented by 10 invoices totalling more than ?400,000-during which it was customised in an 'Outlaw' style. The bodywork was fully repaired and refinished without bumpers, the engine was rebuilt with a replacement cylinder head and converted to run on unleaded fuel, while other major mechanical components including the petrol tank, front and rear axles, and shock absorbers were all overhauled. The car was also upgraded with a five-speed ZF gearbox, front disc brakes, and converted for use with Rudge central-lock wheels, in addition to an uprated ignition system with a modern alternator and high-torque starter, and a switchable stainless-steel exhaust. rnrnFurthermore, a modern radiator and oil cooler were fitted along with an R8 injection pump and injectors, while the US-spec 3.89:1 rear axle ratio was changed to a European-spec 3.64:1 for more comfortable cruising. The cabin, meanwhile, was outfitted with SLS-style seats made from aluminium, and the instrumentation was converted to European specification. A full list of all work carried out is available to view on file along with selected photographs of the restoration. rnrnThe car is offered with a matching-colour hardtop in addition to a raft of spares removed from the car during its restoration, including a four-speed gearbox, re-trimmed seats, cylinder head, brake drums and stub axles, steering wheel, and bumpers (re-chromed prior to being stored). It is also accompanied by its original US title, and several invoices and insurance cards from its time in the United Sates. rnrnThe Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster is one of the most accomplished sportscars of its generation and an icon of a glamorous era in automotive history. This example has been thoroughly restored and beautifully finished by a leading marque specialist at great expense, with a number of modern components-not least its five-speed manual gearbox-that only increase its usability. Thanks to its distinctive doors that give the coupe its unique look-made possible by the birdcage frame pioneered by Mercedes-Benz-the model took 1950s automotive design by storm. As if the car's stunning looks were not enough, the Gullwing also packed a performance punch to match. The car's lightweight construction-dubbed Super Leicht in German, from which the SL part of its name is derived-and its 3.0-litre straight-six M198 engine made for the ultimate sports car mix, then as now earning plaudits for an engaging driving experience.rnrnOf course, Mercedes-Benz engineers did not begin designing the 300 SL from a standing start. Both the Gullwing and subsequent Roadster were based largely on the earlier W194, the competition-ready predecessor to the roadgoing car. This had been developed by Mercedes-Benz on motorsport circuits around the world and was built in time for the 1952 racing season, securing wins at races including the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Eifelrennen at the Nurburgring, and Carrera Panamericana road race in Mexico. The car was undeniably fast, yet it was the Mercedes-Benz team drivers of the era-including Juan Manuel Fangio, Stirling Moss, Hans Klenk, Karl Kling, and Hermann Lang-that made that age special for the German marque.rnrnThis continued success for Mercedes-Benz resulted in the subsequent development of the W198-that would later become the 300 SL-with bosses looking to version of the race car that customers could purchase and drive on the road. The United States was seen as a critical market for expansion and the German marque launched the 300 SL Coupe at the 1954 International Motor Sports Show in New York, notably becoming the first car from the marque ever shown overseas before being revealed in Germany.rnrnCompleted by Mercedes-Benz and leaving the factory on 18 August 1956, chassis number *number in the description* was originally delivered to the Philippines though its distributor in Manila and surely would have been one of only a handful of 300 SLs delivered to that part of the world. Originally finished in Light Blue Metallic (DB353) with Red leather upholstery, it is thought that early in the car's life it was repainted in Silver Metallic. Importantly, the car was also specified with the optional sport suspension and NSL-spec engine (Nockenwelle Sport Leicht, which signifies the presence of a lightweight sport camshaft), raising power output to 230 brake horsepower. Of the 1,400 Gullwings produced, approximately 300 were fitted with both the NSL engine and sport suspension, not counting the four Sportabteilung works-prepared Gullwings or the 29 alloy-bodied examples which were built with all available upgrades.rnrnThe Gullwing's first owner was Augusto Santos of Manila. Details of its early history are not well documented, but the car passed through at least one owner in the United States after it was acquired by Sergio T. Naghiat of Riverdale, New York, before being imported to Germany in 2007. By 2009, the Gullwing was located in Austria and noted as having been restored in the mid-1990s. In 2008 the car had been upgraded with a new cylinder head and sport camshaft to ensure smooth operation with modern unleaded petrol. Its next owner in the UK had the car fully repainted in its current Silver before the car returned to continental Europe, where it was purchased by its next owner 2017. It was subsequently acquired again at an RM Sotheby's auction in 2019. rnrnOver 60 years since its inception, the 300 SL remains one of Mercedes-Benz's most recognisable cars, and its influences can still be seen in the company's automobiles today. Well suited for rallies, touring, or club events, the Gullwing is eminently usable and can be found on every collector's wish list, if not already in their garage. From 105-Series Alfa Romeos to Jaguar E-Types, modern technology is being applied to period icons in an effort to match the performance, usability, and comfort of contemporary automobiles-often to the detriment of a car's unique character. But there is one model, perhaps above all others, that was so far advanced at the point of launch that today, after more than six decades, absolutely no improvements are necessary: the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster. rnrnIts closed sibling, the 300 SL 'Gullwing', pioneered a number of technological innovations that are now mainstays in the wider automobile industry, ranging from fuel injection to its lightweight tubular-frame chassis. With the launch of the 300 SL Roadster following the conclusion of Gullwing production, Mercedes-Benz continued to refine and advance the platform, setting a benchmark standard for open-topped performance cars. World-beating in period, the model remains one of the exemplary automobiles of its generation-and one whose pace, refinement, and dynamism still has the power to excite almost 70 years on. rnrnFirst registered in July 1957 and supplied to the United States , this 300 SL Roadster and while little is known of the car's early history, by 1990, it had returned to its native Germany, in the care of Erik Schwanke of Wachterg, who commissioned a restoration in 1993. Photographs on file, dating from 1994, show the car finished in Silver-Grey over Red leather. After completion of the restoration, the car was purchased by Michael Eschmann of Gummersbach, and from 1996 to 1998, it belonged to Peter Aaray, in whose care the car received further mechanical work, including a rear axle and engine rebuild, as well as a new clutch.rnrnFrom 1998 until 2008, the Mercedes-Benz was owned by Wolfgang Schleinitz of Wildeshausen, who undertook a gearbox rebuild in 2006. In 2008, the 300 SL was sold to a Mr. Nikkolas Benopoulos, a collector and owner of multiple 300 SLs, and was subsequently shipped to and registered in his native Greece. After being sold by him in 2013, the car was acquired by the current owner and imported to the UK, where it remains today. rnrnShortly after the 300 SL's arrival in the UK, the car was entrusted to respected restorer Hilton & Moss. No strangers to Mercedes-Benz products and 300 SLs, their inspection showed that although the 1993 restoration was carried out to a good standard, further investigations revealed improper damage repairs to the rear section of the car and other minor flaws. As a result, the car was stripped to bare metal and fully restored to return it to as-new condition-a restoration that would involve some 3,500 hours of labour. It was decided the car would be finished in the period-correct colour scheme of Anthracite Grey (DB 172) over a contrasting Red leather interior, making for a more unusual and alluring colour combination. During the restoration, it was determined that-at some point-the car had been fitted with a replacement engine of the correct type. Following the completion of the restoration, the car was shown at Salon Prive in 2017, where it was awarded second-in-class honours.rnrnInvoices on file show that the car was subject to 500 miles of shakedown testing by Hilton & Moss following the completion of the restoration in 2016, also detailing servicing by the specialist in 2017 and 2018. The 300 SL's last service was undertaken by Martin Cushway Engineering in March 2020, considered by many to be the UK's go-to 300 SL specialist; the car has covered just under 250 miles since. As such, it remains in truly excellent condition throughout.rnrnOn the road, the 300 SL Roadster performs impeccably, with linear acceleration, smooth gear changes, and a dialled-in engine that simply purrs. Among modern traffic, it immediately becomes apparent how advanced the car is for its age, with road manners that belie its age-it is no wonder that these accomplished machines have become mainstays in large collections and favourites for long-distance touring.
